editGypsy runs through October 18

MILWAUKEE, WI (October 6, 2026) – The reviews are in, and Skylight Music Theatre’s Gypsy: A Musical Fable is earning praise from critics and audiences for its artistic vision, cohesive production, and powerhouse performances. BroadwayWorld applauds how it is “…thrilling to watch…” and “…an absolute delight.” Around The Town Chicago notes, “I highly recommend you get to Skylight and experience it for yourself.” Shepherd Express calls it a “blockbuster production” and says it “…. has all the spark and sizzle of a Broadway opening.”
The production’s critical success reflects the way its many artistic elements come together as one cohesive production. As Ryan Jay Reviews highlights: “This Gypsy is a fabulous example of what results when all pieces of a production come seamlessly together. Smartly staged, superbly performed and full of dynamic energy, Skylight’s Gypsy hits the mark and leaves you with the best kind of chills!” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel adds, “This crisp staging revels in the theatricality of its story.”
At the center of that cohesive vision is Artistic Director and Director Michael Unger, whose direction brings drama, humor, and theatricality to the production. Ryan Jay Reviews writes, “All the accolades are greatly due to the genius of Director Michael Unger… who keeps the production moving with energy and precision, always punctuating the emotional stakes at the story’s heart.” BroadwayWorld says, “Director Michael Unger… gives us the excitement and theatricality Gypsy demands, supported by terrific staging and a set that immerses us in its changing world.”
The production’s choreography further supports that vision. Shepherd Express states, “Choreography (by Betty Weinberger) is spot-on for every song.”
At the heart of the production is Janet Metz as Momma Rose, earning praise from both critics and audiences. Karen Valentine writes, “But the evening belongs to Madam Rose! This coveted role is interpreted and rejuvenated by Janet Metz as a Master Class in performing. Ms. Metz is a triple threat, voice, dance, dramatic and comedic timing providing magical moments that makes the stage so revered. Brava Janet Metz for giving Rose a depth and sensitivity that often goes unmined. Such Gold!” Ryan Jay Reviews says of Metz, “She brings extraordinary dimension to Rose’s ambition, manipulation, vulnerability and desperate need for relevance, making the character both formidable and deeply human.” One audience member exclaims, “This is a magnificent production. Janet is a real powerhouse and the rest of the cast is stellar. Dancing is superb. Must see!”
“We are honored that audiences and critics alike are responding to this production in exactly the way we intended. The performances are absolutely stellar, led by the remarkable Janet Metz as Momma Rose, and followed by a large cast of other phenomenal performers,” says Artistic Director and Director Michael Unger. “This show is timely, important theatre with as many laughs as moving dramatic moments. It has been a delight to craft the show with this remarkable cast and production team. We certainly hope to share it with as many theatre fans as possible.”
