Help Bring Live Theatre to Life

Ushers play an important role in creating a welcoming and enjoyable experience for every guest. In exchange for volunteering your time, you’ll have the opportunity to see performances, meet fellow theatre enthusiasts, and support Milwaukee’s home for music theatre.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Welcome guests as they arrive at the theatre.
  • Scan tickets and assist with entry.
  • Direct guests to their assigned seats.
  • Distribute programs and event materials.
  • Assist guests with accessibility needs.
  • Monitor late seating procedures.
  • Support guests during intermission.
  • Help prepare the theatre after performances.

How It Works

  1. Complete the online volunteer application.
  2. Attend a required new usher orientation session.
  3. Complete a required usher training session and materials.
  4. Select available shifts through the volunteer scheduler.
  5. Arrive 65 minutes before curtain time.
  6. Follow usher dress code requirements.
  7. Remain until post-show responsibilities are complete.

Ushering FAQs

Do I get to watch the performance?

Yes. Ushers are generally able to watch the performance after audience seating responsibilities are complete.

Is training required?

Yes. All new ushers must complete orientation and training before volunteering for performances.

What should I wear?

Ushers of all gender expressions are required to follow the same dress code: Black and/or white top. Black and/or white slacks, dress pants, or skirts. Skirts must end just above the knee or have tights. Black and/or white closed toe shoes. Shoes must be walkable for aisles and stairs. Black or white jacket is optional. Black or white tie is optional.

How often do I need to volunteer?

Volunteers may select shifts based on availability, though regular participation is encouraged.

Can I volunteer with a friend or family member?

Yes. Friends and family members are welcome to apply and volunteer together if approved and trained. Ushers may sign up to usher with 1 guest. The usher signing up assumes responsibility for their guest following all policies of the BTC.
