Shayne Steliga Named Skylight Music Theatre’s 2020 Lee Dougherty Ross Debut Artist Award Winner

Milwaukee, Wis. (May 29, 2020) — Shayne Steliga has been named Skylight Music Theatre’s 2020 Lee Dougherty Ross Debut Artist Award winner. Each season Skylight recognizes a performer who has made his or her debut at Skylight Music Theatre.

Steliga made his Skylight debut in January 2020 in Ruddigore as Sir Despard Murgatroyd. The award is named for Dougherty Ross, a former Milwaukee performer, voice coach and teacher who is a long-time supporter of Skylight.

“We are pleased to present the Lee Dougherty Ross Debut Artist Award to Shayne Steliga,” said Skylight Artistic Director Michael Unger. “Shayne brought a great energy, presence, and a fabulous baritone to his debut role as Sir Despard in Ruddigore. He is also a very dedicated performer with a great work ethic and an extremely nice person – all attributes we love to see in a Skylight performer. It was a special thrill to surprise him with this recognition during the recent Skylight Sings benefit concert. He became quite moved, and, in turn, so did we."

A graduate of Wauwatosa West and UW- Green Bay, Steliga has performed in a multitude of regional roles including Virgil in The Divine Komedy with Milwaukee Chamber, Obereon & Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Arts @ Large, Potemkin in Celebration with Windfall and Goeffrey in The Lion in Winter with Pride Theater company. Steliga is a voice-over artist and guitarist who regularly works with WAIP, a podcast about the Milwaukee theater community. Steliga is also the lead vocalist of the Milwaukee-based Rock/ Acoustic band “Sorry, We’re Open.”

Skylight Artistic Director Michael Unger surprised Steliga with the award following his performance in Skylight Sings: A Virtual Concert to benefit Skylight Music Theatre on Thursday, May 21, 2020.
